Mourning Dove Theotokos in Green
This painting depicts a mother Mourning Dove gazing lovingly at her twin chicks, nestled in woven twigs and delicate vines. Theotokos refers to the Virgin and Child that derived from Christian religious canon. I used this familiar imagery to depict a mother and her babies. This piece features a gold leaf halo encircling the head of each dove, and an ombre green background with light emanating from the mother bird. The frame is antiqued metallic silver and gold, with minor wear for character and an aged appearance..
This highly detailed piece is part of my series of stylized and embellished bird portraits, which investigate the concept of veneration and encourage the viewer to contemplate the value we place on individual animal lives.
